An ankylosed tooth can disrupt alveolar bone development in growing patients because it leads to an infraocclusion of the tooth, resulting in inclination of adjacent teeth which requires complicated orthodontic or prosthetic treatment. However, extraction of an ankylosed tooth might cause a considerable amount of alveolar bone loss. In such case, decoronation procedure is highly recommended for the preservation of alveolar bone. This case report describes the management of ankylosed tooth from dental trauma in 9 year?old boy through decoronation procedure. A 9 year?old boy was brought to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Seoul, Korea with a history of an avulsion on maxillary left incisor 2 years ago. The tooth was diagnosed as an ankylosis and an infraocclusion of about 6mm was observed. Decoronation was treated considering that the patient was in the pre?maximal growth phase. After 6 years follow?up, there were favorable clinical results of alveolar bone growth horizontally as well as vertically.
